Dr. Valerie Rappaport
MD, FACOG
Dr. Valerie Rappaport is a board-certified specialist in Maternal - Fetal Medicine and Medical Genetics. Her areas of focus include ultrasound, prenatal diagnosis, reproductive genetics, nutrition in pregnancy, and preconception care.
Dr. Rappaport completed her fellowship training in Medical Genetics and Maternal- Fetal Medicine at UCLA in Los Angeles. Following fellowship training she joined the academic faculty at UCLA where, in addition to teaching and research activities, she developed and directed the Prenatal Diagnosis program at UCLA-Oliveview Medical Center.
Seeking an exit from big city living, she relocated with her family to New Mexico over 20 years ago. She has come to appreciate the wide-open spaces, green chili, friendly people and other New Mexican pleasures as well as the unique challenges and benefits of providing medical care in this state.
As a faculty member at the University of New Mexico Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology for many years, Dr. Rappaport was actively involved in education, research and patient care as well as in statewide programs in maternal health. She directed the Prenatal Diagnosis and Reproductive Genetics Service at UNM where her clinical focus was advanced ultrasound technique in prenatal diagnosis, reproductive genetics and fetal diagnosis, as well as comprehensive transitional care for babies born with special needs through the Special Delivery Program, a program she co-founded with neonatologist, Dr. Rebecca Moran. Dr. Rappaport continues to be involved in medical education and research as a Clinical Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology at UNM.
Dr. Rappaport is very happy to have the opportunity to be part of the Piñon Perinatal group. She brings a depth of clinical experience to Piñon Perinatal with a special focus on ultrasound, preconception and pregnancy wellness, prenatal diagnostic procedures (chorionic villus sampling and amniocentesis, fetal therapeutic procedures) and high-risk pregnancy management. As one of a few physicians who are board certified in both medical genetics and maternal fetal medicine, she is particularly committed to providing patients with up-to-date genetic screening and diagnosis, comprehensive reproductive genetics care including pre-conception counseling as well as post pregnancy loss consultation.
